A Midsummer Night's Dream

Queensland Conservatorium: 14, 16, 18 & 20 September 2008

The Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University presents A Midsummer Night's DreamSceen from A Midsummer Nights Dream

Needing a new opera for the 1960 Aldeburgh Festival at relatively short notice, Britten did not have the time for the long and often tedious process of collaborating with a librettist. He therefore siezed upon an already existing text, namely one of his favourite Shakespearean plays. Peter Pears adapted the libretto, reducing the original by almost half, yet skilfully retaining the magical essence of the original. Britten responded with a luminous and haunting score of unrivalled brilliance. His musical setting not only captures and enhances the joyfulness and good nature of Shakespeare's play, but also through its enchanting vocal and instrumental writing, draws detailed characterisation from every role - from the haughty Oberon to the bumbling Bottom.
